Background
Communication is a vital part of human existence and language is a gift from God to fulfil this need. As we know different groups of people use different types and forms of language and though created by humans, these forms of communication need to be considered a divine gift.
Christ gave prominence to children, widows and the differently able. It is our responsibility to follow His footsteps and help our Christian community.
As the Bible Society team visited the School for the Deaf in Ratmalana in the year 2009, we realized the immense effort the teachers expended in coaching the students for public examinations. We were truly amazed at their commitment and enthusiasm in this difficult task. We also realized that many students had not passed in Christianity at the Ordinary Level Examination. Therefore we felt, it was not enough for the Bible Society to gift Bibles to the children but it was also necessary that we help them to recognize and understand the meaning of the words in the Bible by providing through Video presentation. This Video will be a great source of help to the teachers to teach the deaf children on our faith. It will also no doubt develop their confidence and mental status and make them feel that being deaf is no barrier to become a productive citizen in Sri Lanka.
Under the guidance & support of Principals & teachers of School for the Deaf in Ratmalana & St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf in Ragama, on 01st of December 2013 the Ceylon Bible Society was able to launch the Sri Lanka Christian Sign Directory (book) – Volume 1 at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Bauddhaloka Mawatha , Colombo 7.
For the present project too the Ceylon Bible Society was able to work closely with the School for the Deaf in Ratmalana . We hope that the deaf students who study Christianity for the General Certificate Examination (Ordinary Level) will be able to understand the stories (Book of Luke) of the Holy Bible through this Video Presentation not only for their examinations but also as the source of their religious beliefs.
The Ceylon Bible Society has started video recording of this production on Friday, 10th November 2017. Please uphold us in your prayers. This product was launched during the Induction service of the New General Secretary of the Ceylon Bible Society on 13th January 2018 at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour , Colombo 7.
