St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk Church, Colombo 03 transported those present to the Biblical eras of great King David and Solomon as the Book of Psalms was opened to celebrate God’s intervention in the redemption of humankind during a Lenten meditation held on 11th of March (Friday) at 6.00 p.m. This was one of the most extraordinary events in the annals of the Ceylon Bible Society as heads of all Churches gathered under one roof to this celebration of psalms. Meaningful meditations based on Bible readings taken from Psalm 51 were delivered. A novel version of them the great psalm in praise of the Shepherd God, namely, The Lord’s my Shepherd was beautifully rendered by Mrs.Manique Ruth Fernando as the call to worship.
St. Cecilia’s Choir of St. Joseph’s, gave voice to LaudateOmnesGentes, Worthy is the Lamb and Lauda Jerusalem while St. Bridget’s Convent Choir sang Beauty for Brokeness and Hallelujah to the Lamb. This was followed by God So Loved the World and Hosanna to the Son of David by St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk Choir Voice of Praise and You Crown the Year and Broken Vessels by the choir Camerati. Soloists Mrs.Manique Ruth Fernando and Master Shevaan Dayaratne sang Change My Heart O God.

The Lenten meditation consisted of six parts which included Bible readings, Meditations, Choral presentations and prayers by Heads of Churches and senior members of Christian organizations. Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Fernando – Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo, representing the Catholic Church, Rev.Asiri Perera, President /Bishop Methodist Church, Rev. Kingsley Perera – Former Head of the Baptist Sangamaya, Colonel Alistair Venter, Territorial Commander Salvation Army, Rev. Stanley Nelson, President, Christian Reformed Church, Rev.David Beling, Life Governor of CBS, Rev. Melvin De Silva – Vicar, Christ Church Galle Face and Chaplain C.M.S. Ladies College, Rev. Stewart Lamont , Minister in charge, St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk,Mrs.Lakshani P Fernando, General Secretary of CBS, Mrs.Priyadharshini De Mel, Member of the Camerati Choir, Mrs.Jayanthi David President of Women’s Committee CBS, Mrs.Devika Ukwatte, Member of the General Council, Mrs.Sarojini Nagendran, 2nd Vice President of CBS, Mrs.Anthea Seneratne wife of the CBS President and Mrs.Priyanthi Seneviratne Van Dort,Choir Directress, of St. Bridget’s Convent Colombo 07 were among those present and led the service through readings, meditations and songs of praise and worship.
